Poet, playwright, essayist and theatre director, he played a central role in 20<sup>th <\/sup>century avant-garde movements and is considered to be one of the fathers of contemporary theatre. In 1932 he wrote <em>Teatre de la crueltat<\/em> (T<em>h\u00e9\u00e2tre de la cruaut\u00e9<\/em>), a manifesto that laid the foundations of avant-garde theatre together with his plays <em>El teatre i el seu doble<\/em> (<em>Le Th\u00e9\u00e2tre et son double<\/em>, 1938) and <em>Heliog\u00e0bal <\/em>(1934).
