Diving into the wreck, a National Book Award-winning book, was written at a moment of impasse between the life Rich had known until then and the life that awaited her. Her husband of seventeen years committed suicide in the fall of 1970. From that point on, all of Rich’s romantic experiences would be with other women. In Diving into the wreck we find, for the first time bluntly, the change of consciousness that had been building for years, and the author deals with topics such as language and its relationship with power, the historical relationship between men and women, and sexuality. It reveals the intellectual and creative journey made up to that moment, and it is also where you can see the world that opened up in front of her. We readers accompany the poetic self in this search for a new way of trying to grasp and explain the world. It is a me that inquires, doubts and illuminates.

Throughout the work, the importance of language is shown to portray these new realities, fleeing from male literary canons and, therefore, looking for an alternative way of expressing oneself. There is a commitment, latent in most poems, to the idea of community and interdependence. Consciousness, which may seem personal, is actually a social and shared consciousness. There is also a commitment to unearthing the silenced, and the fact is that Diving into the wreck is a book that, in essence, wants to give space to possibility. Pol Guasch’s translation into Catalan, beyond respecting the formal awkwardness of the original, keeps the emphasis where Rich places it, and makes the potential meanings reach us intact.

Rich is talked about as a political poet, but her poetry never fell into the slogan. It reaches us with the same validity as half a century ago because what transcends it are not only the ideas that arise, but the mind – curious, intelligent, open to mistakes – that is behind it.

Translation by Pol Guasch
Foreword by Ada Bruguera

Biography of the author
Adrienne Cecile Rich (1929, Maryland – 2012, California) was an American lesbian poet, essayist, intellectual, critic and activist. She died at the age of 82. As a student, her poems won the prestigious Yale Prize for Young Poetry, from which came A Change of World (1951), which showcased his formal technique.

Her next work, Diving into the wreck, shows the transformation from well-crafted but imitative poetry to an energetic personal style. Her growing commitment to the feminist movement influenced much of her work. Her poetic work, along with that of Audre Lorde and Alice Walker, have inspired the struggle not only of North American feminists but also of Latin America.

This long and autobiographical poem, written in 1966 and unfinished, is one of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s lesser-known works —yet, as Pere Gimferrer states in his foreword, “one of the most striking by Pasolini as a poet, and also by Pasolini in general”. Translated by Gerard Cisneros and presented in a face-to-face bilingual edition, the poem is complemented by a number of footnotes that clarify some aspects of the life and works of the Italian writer. Poeta de les cendres is a book in free verse, of liberated poetry. A beautiful and rough text, where the years, the victories and failures, the flaws of his own life and of a fascist, communist, catholic and petite bourgeois Italy are all serenely and powerfully expressed; an unfinished and beautiful text, as unfinished and beautiful as his life was.

Pier Paolo Pasolini (Bologna, 1922 – Ostia, 1975) was an Italian writer, poet and film director. His poetic work, as well as his essays and his production as a journalist, combatively questioned official Marxism and Catholicism, censuring their poor understanding of the cultural background of their own proletarian and rural bases. A central and controversial figure in 20th-century Italian literature.

Just seventy years after of Antonin Artaud’s death, we publish one of its most emblematic works that, until now, we had not been able to read in Catalan: Heliogabalus or the wreathed Anarchist, translated by Xavier Valls Guinovart and with an epilogue of Arnau Pons. Heliogabalus is the key part within the work of Artaud. Relevant within the French surrealism, it had a strong impact on the literature of that time for his groundbreaking vision of moral and religious rites.

It is showed as a biography of the Roman emperator Heliogabalus, who reigned between 218 and 222 a.C, but it is narrated on Artaud’s way; avoiding simplicity, creating a lyrical atmosphere, and with a strange beauty in the speech that needs the full attention of the reader. The priest el-gabal started reigning when he was 14 years old, thank to the intrigues of his mother and his grandmother. From the first moment he is shown as an atypical sovereign, willing to impose the traditions and cults of his origins, Syria, a behaviour that is viewed with horror by the conservative Romans. His figure evokes the arbitrary tyranny and the moral disorder, aspects that Artaud turns around as a sacred mission: to subvert the false order of what is reasonable and to establish the domain of the confronted principles of life and death.

The edition:
The work contains an epilogue of a well-known figure in the study of the work of Artaud, Arnau Pons, who is also known as a poet and essayist. The book is the second volume of the collection BÈSTIES Butxaca (pocket), which publishes texts of the authors that Edicions Poncianes have already published in poster format (in the collection Bèsties), with the purpose of deepening on the authors that, on posters, you can discover.

The author:
Antonin Artaud (1896-1948), French poet, playwright, essayist, actor and theater director, one of the key figures of the vanguardist movement on 20th century and one of the fathers of contemporary theater. On 1932 he writes Theater of Cruelty, manifesto published to the Nouvelle Revue Francese, where, together with The theater and its double (1938) or Heliogabalus (1934), he built the bases of the avant-garde drama. Crazy and tramp, at the end of his life he spent more than ten years interned in mental asylums. Shortly before dying, was published one of his most famous works, Van Gogh, who committed suicide by society (1947).

The translator:
Xavier Valls Guinovart has leaded several cycles of reading, seminars and reading workshops, such as the one avout the poem of Guilgamesh. He has translated the works L’autonomia en i entre cossos polítics, from Gerard Rosich, Manifest Folk, from Alessandro Sciarroni, Conversa al jardí, from Bouchra Khalili, La saga del volcà, Joan Jonas and Les vuit muntanyes, Paolo Cognetti, among others.
