Mercè Rodoreda is “indisputably the most important writer of contemporary Catalan literature” (Carme Arnau). This bèstia collects fragments taken from her most accomplished works, such as Viatges i flors, La Mort i la Primavera, La plaça del Diamant, Mirall trencat or Quanta, quanta guerra…, chosen for their great lyrical power and the representativeness of the style. Selected by Maria Cabrera —who was recently awarded the prestigious Carles Riba poetry prize—, the texts are presented alongside a beautiful portrait of Rodoreda from the archives of Pilar Aymerich.

«I mentre érem el temps, de dintre meu es va alçar una força estranya, com si m’acabessin de fer de ferro per dintre, com si la meva mare, darrera de la fornal, m’hagués fet de ferro barrejant-me amb el ferrer. I per primera vegada vaig sentir què era la força d’un noi quan es va desfent de ser criatura.»

Bèsties is a wallpaper collection that combines the poetry and the portraits of some of the most acclaimed authors of universal literature. A selection of excerpts —posthumous, unpublished, forgotten— are presented in a groundbreaking format by the translators, current Catalan poets. The posters escape the parcelling of conventional pagination to project in a single canvas the unity of meaning emanating from the poems. Each wallpaper comes with a separate front page including a foreword by the translator, which contextualizes their selection and situates the author in their context.

***

Enric Casasses presents twelve poems from the time when Victor Català was not even in her thirties: wild, insubordinate and deeply personal —and almost impossible to find in bookstores.

Víctor Català (L’Escala, 1869-1966) was the pen name used by Caterina Albert i Paradís. A central figure in Catalan modernisme and, by extension, in 20th century Catalan literature, Català standed out because of her narrative prowess and an incisive style, which was a reflection of her original and independent character, as evidenced in her short stories (Drames rurals, 1902) and in the acclaimed novel Solitud, one of the most universal works in Catalan literature. She led a reclusive life in her Empúries home, and continued writing and publishing after the dissolution of the Noucentisme movement: some scattered works in the 1920s and a string of prose and short story collections in the 1940s and 1950s, published by Editorial Selecta. Her main works remain popular and are regularly reprinted in Catalan.

We present a brief but intense selection of Albert Camus’ Carnets (1962-1965), the posthumously published personal journals of the Nobel prize winning French author. Spanning over 700 pages, in them we find a complete, straightforward, no-filter Camus; it is an irregular work —in the best possible sense of ‘irregular’—, thanks to the implicit authenticity and transparency in something that was not written to be published. In this poster Edicions Poncianes, together with Francesc Gelonch and Laia Carbonell, offer a series of powerful extracts: aphorisms, ideas and fragments full of poetic emotion.

This selection constitutes the first ever publication of the Carnets in Catalan. They are a fascinating counterpart to the rest of his work and give the original context to some of his most famous quotes.

We publish an excerpt from one of Viginia Woolf’s first short stories. Right after her first novel, The Voyage Out, Woolf wrote “The Mark on the Wall”, which she published alongside a text of her husband in the publishing house they founded together. The work displays, on one hand, her experimenting with interior monologue, which she would later fully develop in the celebrated Mrs Dalloway. On the other, the stream of thought that she evokes lets the reader into the mind of an author still free from the burden of recognition and acclaim who, precisely because of that, is presented to the reader in the most earnest and visceral of ways.

17 beautiful poems by one of the most singular voices in American literature, selected and translated by Míriam Cano.

«The entirety of Emily Dickinson’s poetic work —a corpus of 1800 poems— can be structured around five main themes: love, death and immortality, nature, pain and anguish, and religious experience. In this selection I have focused mainly on her metaphysical poetry. I find it overwhelming that someone who spent her years in almost complete reclusion could have such a vast inner life and could question with such deep understanding the role of people in the transit of life, and the possibilities of afterlife.» (From Míriam Cano’s foreword)

Sam Abrams presents a selection of Gertrude Stein’s best poems, taken from her book Tender buttons in the centenary of its publication. In her poetry, Stein plays with language, investigates and breaks the mould in order to achieve a true reflection of the thinking and mundanity of her own experience. Dr. Sam Abrams, poet and literary critic, brings us closer once again to an author that is often marginalized, to celebrate her strenghts and proclaim the centrality of her work.

Gertrude Stein (Allegheny, Pennsylvania, 1874 – Paris, 1946) was an American writer, although she spent most of his life in France. She is considered to have been the catalyst of modern art and avant-garde literature. In Paris, her position allowed her to use her house as a meeting point between American and French intellectuals. As a poet, she is known for innovating and experimenting with language. Author of the famous verse “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose”, her poetry is collected in over twenty books.

Sam Abrams (Beckley, West Virginia, 1952) is an American poet, essayist, translator and literary critic. He moved to Catalunya in the seventies and graduated in Hispanic Filology (UAB). He has held teaching positions, has been secretary of the PEN Català association, has translated over twenty collections of modern Catalan poetry into English and has introduced many lesser-known poets of the English-speaking world into our literature. Among his publications as a poet are Calculations… (1997) and T’estimo. He is currently codirector of the book collections “Clàssics” (Editorial Proa) and “Calaix de Versos” (Eumo).

A selection of Màrius Sampere’s most representative poems. Sampere is a consolidated voice —one of the most important— in the Catalan literary world, yet he has managed to stay away from its most established currents. Having constructed a prolific and self-referential body of work, Sampere’s poems reveal the ultimate motivation behind his writing: everyday life. His work hits the bottom and unmasks readers, as it touches transcendenal issues with deep humility, from a metaphysical viewpoint but also with a touch of playful humor. At the same time, its approach to life and the universe is clearly influenced by Orientalism. His recurring theme is human condition, a motive that Mireia Vidal-Conte has faithfully conveyed in her selection.

Màrius Sampere (Barcelona, 1928) is a poet. His first collection, L’home i el límit, earned him the prestigious Carles Riba poetry prize in 1963. Through the seventies and the eighties he won several awards and his books were published regularly. From the 90s onwards his work recieves institutional recognition and popular acclaim, as he recieves such accolades as the Serra d’Or Critics’ award for Subllum (2000) or the Premi de la Crítica, the Ciutat de Barcelona and the Nacional de Cultura awards. In 2010 he is awarded the Premi Jaume Fuster, chosen by Catalan writers.

Mireia Vidal-Conte (Barcelona, 1970) is a poet and translator. Bachelor of Information Science (UAB) and Literary Theory and Comparative Literature (UB), her work has featured in many anthologies, such as El poder del cuerpo (ed. Meri Torras), Donzelles de l’any 2000 or Eròtiques i Despentinades, Trentaquattro Poeti Catalani per il XXI secolo. She has translated the works of Brigitte Oleschinski, Jordi Carrió and Eugènia de Vasconcellos. Her work has been translated into Italian and Czech.

Edicions Poncianes publishes a selection of Allen Ginsberg’s most representative poems. With his visionary, narrative verse, the leader of the Beat generation is, Whitman-permitting, the poet that managed to influence an entire American generation: if Whitman represented the deep America and the origins of the country, Ginsberg represents its counterculture and becomes the leading figure of a movement so important it lives on to this day. Street poetry that evades lyricism and displays a formal variety that is at once refreshing and striking.

Allen Ginsberg (USA, 1926-1997) was a poet, leading figure of the Beat generation. He acted as a nexus between the Beat movement of the 50s and the hippies of the 60s, and was friends with Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, William S. Burroughs, Patti Smith and Bob Dylan. Ginsberg’s poetry was heavily influenced by Modernism, Romanticism and the beat and cadence of Jazz, but also by his following of the Kagyu school of Buddhism and his Jewish upbringing. He considered himself to be a successor of William Blake and Walt Whitman. The power of his poetry, his long verses and his New World-influenced exhuberance reflect the continuity of the inspiration he strived for.

Gerard Cisneros (Manresa, 1989) is a poet and bachelor in Philosophy. Some of his poems can be found in the collection Bolets (GNURF, 2013), published jointly with Enric Casasses and Edgar Alemany. He is a regular presence in poetry readings around the country.

A representative selection of Blai Bonet’s poetry, coinciding with the publication of his personal journals Els ulls / La mirada and of his complete works. In this way, justice is done for one of the best poets in Catalan literature, as the importance of his work is undisputed and garners universal recongnition. The power of his work remains alive thanks to a poetry that is bold and radical through a simple language, without artifice, as he manages to portray in a humane light the hardships of such difficult moments as illness or war. Pau Vadell offers a quality glimpse of Bonet’s work, so it can be approached in the most intimate of ways.

Blai Bonet (Santanyí, Mallorca, 1926-1997). Poet, novelist and art critic. A conflictive relationship with religion and his struggle with tuberculosis marked his personal and literary trajectory. In 1958 he published El mar, a novel that caused a stir both because of the subject matter and its literary treatment. In it, he incorporated new experimental trends that were in vogue around Europe. His efforts to create his own personal language, evolving towards the free-form, culminated in the poetry collection L’Evangeli segons un de tants (Carles Riba prize, 1962). In 1990 he was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi distinction by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Pau Vadell Vallbona (Santanyí, Mallorca, 1984) has a consolidated career as a poet, writer, historian, cultural administrator and editor. He has published several poetry collections, such as Quan salives (BTV prize, 2005), Convit al silenci (J. M. López Picó prize, 2009) and Temple (Miquel Àngel Riera prize, 2009). He is a regular contributor to the literary magazines Pèl capell, Caràcters, Poetari and Superna. He is coordinator at the publishing house AdiAedicions.
